"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when we grow up." -Pablo Picasso
My vision is for my scholars to build a lifelong love for art and know that great art happens when an artist pays attention to small details and seeks to go beyond the visual representation of subject matter.
I currently teach approximately 600 students per year, 150 per quarter.
More than 95% of my students are African-American and on free or reduced price lunch. New Orleans is a city that is deeply rooted in culture, food, festivals, music and the arts. Unfortunately, many of my students lack the resources to explore and learn about the history of visual arts in New Orleans outside of our school. My students are the future of the New Orleans Art scene, and they don’t even know it yet!
My Project
My students need 10 classroom mailboxes, paint brushes, oil pastels, and larger paper to better show off their artistic talent. The mailboxes will be used in each of the five classrooms I teach in as a primary way to store art portfolios, work and supplies to address the issue of growth and development. This will develop a class routine as well as promote student ownership of learning and build responsibility.
Currently we only have large paintbrushes. With 3rd and 4th grade, I want to teach a painting unit in which detailed paintings will be assigned, and, in order to obtain quality work, we need quality brushes that will show consistency in brush strokes. The 18 x 24 paper will allow us to have varying size paper for our projects. Currently we are using copier paper which curls when painted on and does not withstand heavy art mediums meaning their work looks less excellent.
Oil pastels, a softer waxy crayon, are a great transition from crayon, color pencil, and marker to continue building color theory knowledge. These Cray-Pas will give us another medium to explore.
Donations to this project will improve our classrooms by providing my scholars with larger scale paper to work with for more detailed art compositions and brushes for quality brushstrokes.
The oil pastels will give us another tool for learning color theory as well as a way to promote responsibility, growth and development in the culture of our classrooms. Your donation will impact years of scholars who may become the next Lionel Milton, Brandan Odums or better.
