The Beat of My Heart

My students need 10 djembes to learn to play different rhythms together in a group, a bongo drum to add contrasting sound to our group, a floor tom tom to gather around and create a community sound, and 6 egg shakers to feel the beat.

This project is fully funded

I teach general music in a high-need community to students grades Pre-K through 8th in IL.

I created my music program from scratch in 2001 with funds from my principal. Now there are no funds for music given the current economy. My students love to beat on their desks and I would love to "tap" into that desire with a drumming workshop.

My students will benefit from playing djembes, tom tom, bongo, and shaker eggs. These instruments will allow us to create a "drum orchestra". Through this orchestra, my students will learn to play as a group and listen to each other in the group. This, in turn, would allow us to create community.

Your help will ensure that all of my students get to experience the thrill of playing and creating music as a community.
