The Beat Goes On: Empowering Students Through Art

My students need 31 musical CDs including Handel: Water Music and 41 books about composers and music including Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite and Risseldy, Rosseldy.

My Students

Classical music has endured, as have paintings by Michelangelo and da Vinci because they offer countless new insights every time one encounters these works. Conductors go to concerts and museum directors visit museums because the music and art are different every time. Help my kids learn this.

Our stable neighborhood is changing and our older, urban, diverse school neighborhood is becoming a pocket of poverty where few students can afford supplies or fees for field trips.

Well over 1/2 of my students qualify for free and reduced rate breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title 1 school. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. One out of every 9 students is in a bilingual or ELL program. We have students who have recently arrived from Somalia, China, Nepal, Pakistan, as well as Natives from rural areas. We are located near two military bases and have a significant number of students who are children of deployed military personnel. Although they are great kids, many of my students suffer from low self-esteem. My third graders need to study and celebrate music but need resources our school can not afford.

My Project

My goal is to infuse music and the study of composers into library skills curriculum. I am requesting 31 CD's of music works that span the time from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Music is from different countries in Europe, Africa, South America as well as America. I am also asking for 41 books about specific compositions or composers. I plan to introduce the composer, read and discuss the books. Then students will listen to the music. They will also learn about the history and country of origin. Since my students cannot afford to go to live musical performances, this project will enable them to study and learn about music while listening to great recordings of classical music. My school does not have a budget that would support this type of project.

Not all concerts are wonderful; not all recordings are fabulous, but currently my third graders do not have the opportunity to decide for themselves because they do not have access to either concerts or recordings.

In order to grow and experience music my students need the support of donors. Please help them learn about the wonders of music.
