My students need copies of I Am Malala (Young Reader's Edition). I have a few copies of my own, but I'm asking for enough to have a one-to-one distribution.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school provides a project based education to seventh and eighth graders on the East side of San Jose. More than eighty percent of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. We have a charter school that has been a hinderance on our campus, taking both students and space, for the last four years. Our ability to continue to offer a well-rounded education to this community is in danger of ending in the not too distant future.
Though our test scores have been on the rise (thanks mostly to our very dedicated staff and our hard-working students), we still have many challenges in front of us.
This year one of our biggest challenges is that we don't have enough funds to purchase books for the ELA curriculum. Not even a class set of a relatively cheap book is within the realm of possibility unless we have some help.
The book I'd like to purchase is I Am Malala (Young Reader's Edition). Ideally I'd like enough for a one-to-one distribution, but I can make a class set work. It would also be fantastic to share funds with my ELA colleagues who are in the same difficult positon.
My Project
Being able to purchase these books will mean exposing students to an important pattern and allow them to see the true value of their education. I Am Malala explores how men of ill-intent have come to rise to power throughout history by relating it to how the Taliban rose to power in Malala's home country of Pakistan. The story is told by Malala, who is inspiring in her faith in humanity and dedication to the importance of education. I believe reading this novel allows students to be more globally aware and to see the necessity of their education. It also has the power to inspire students to be advocates for the changes they want to see in the world. Or, at least, that's what it's done for my students in the past.
