These books will help students develop comprehension skills by encouraging them to interpret both words and images and to connect them. They also build visual literacy, foster critical thinking, and spark discussions about character emotions and plot development. Students learn to analyze how illustrations support the narrative, which strengthens their overall understanding and engagement with the book.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom has become much more dynamic with the addition of graphic books. Students are eager to select their favorites from our new collection. I see students who previously struggled with reading now confidently exploring stories. The visual elements make reading more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Several students who were previously unable to read all the words have shown a newfound excitement for reading, thanks to these graphic books. For example, one student who rarely picked up a book is now the first to reach for our new graphic novels and loves sharing insights about the characters and artwork. He has drawn some characters for me. We are deeply grateful for the support from donors, which has made a remarkable difference, and for the positive impact these books have had on our students. Most of the students are fans of the Dog Man series, and they love it. There were several days when every student wanted to read the Dog Man books, and I didn't have enough copies to go around. \r\n\r\nWith one student, we practiced the second-grade sight words. I asked him to write down any word he didn't know from the text. Although he is still learning these words, he was excited to read from the book and even took it home to continue reading. I was pleasantly surprised. \r\n\r\nWhen it was time to read independently, the students chose to read Dog Man and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The classroom was remarkably quiet, as everyone was focused on their books. I asked them to summarize the book they read after finishing.\r\n\r\nI had 16 students, and each one wanted to read the Dog Man books. One student even asked if he could take a book home to continue reading. I was surprised, so I let him borrow the book.\r\n\r\nMany of our donors love to read, just as we do, but they may not be as knowledgeable about effective teaching methods.Many of our donors love to read books (we do too!), but may not be as knowledgeable as you are about how to teach them.","fullyFundedDate":1744290649290,"projectUrl":"project/pictures-to-read/9237568/","projectTitle":"Pictures to Read","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Santibanez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9768618"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4782","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":273,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":19,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":76,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":77.5,"schoolId":4782,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bridges Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bridges Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/franklin-mckinley-school-district/bridges-academy/4782"}
