My Students

Sometimes, I think our little music program is the best-kept secret in Chinatown! I've been very fortunate to be able to build a fantastic band and percussion program at this school. Students are able to choose to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument, and I get to teach them for all three years of their middle school experience.

Although I've been teaching for a long time, I will never get tired of seeing the look on a student's face when they hear themselves playing music on an instrument.

I also love helping students move from nervous beginners to excited intermediate players to confident veterans, playing quality music in groups and as soloists along the way.

My Project

The Bass Drum is the Anchor. That's what I tell my percussion students when we're in our drum circle. I love teaching authentic Afro-Cuban and West African music to my students, because it ends up being almost 10 lessons in one! We learn about another culture, music history, playing independent parts, counting and keeping a steady beat, correct playing technique, being responsible in a group setting, and working collaboratively.

Better than all of these teaching points is the look on their faces when they hear themselves playing and singing centuries-old music.

Each student suddenly recognizes that they are participating in something real and vital, and I love to see their looks of intense concentration melt into expressions of unadulterated joy.

Sadly, one of our Bass hand drums has lost two rubber feet, and there's a crack in the shell. I'm afraid its time as a useful instrument has come to an end, so we're looking to replace it, with your help.
