My Students

I have 9th and 10th grade students at an inner city high school in Philadelphia. The new 9th graders are entering into a whole new world. They are now leaving the comfort of their neighborhoods and traveling across the city at 14 years old to a school with hardly any resources.

My freshman are used to 20-30 students in their entire 8th grade class that they stay with all day long.

They may have only a few teachers on the same floor. When they come to me in high school, they have no sense of organization and are overwhelmed with the idea of 150 students they are traveling with in their grade, and hundreds more in the school. But unfortunately when they get to high school, the amount of resources gets stretched and students can't afford the basic essentials that you need to learn. My students are more focused on making sure they have enough food and clothing. This year, a number of our students reside in local shelters.

My Project

Backpacks and folders are basic necessities for learning. After walking the halls each day and trying to supply as many students as possible with basic items, they still are in need. Students are losing work because they sit it down because they don't have a book bag to put their work in and they don't want to take it to lunch or have it get wet in the rain. They also don't have folders to organize work for different classes. It's very frustrating to students when they can't find work. They become easily defeated and want to give up. No 9th grader should want to give up.

By supporting my 9th graders, you will be helping students with basic educational essentials.

They will be able to start off their high school career on the right foot. Studies show that 9th grade is the most crucial year in predicting whether a student will graduate high school.
