This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
About halfway through the year supplies in an art classroom can start to dwindle. Equipment and materials start to lose their luster. Our school is no different and a few of our basic materials need a flip.
Through living in high poverty areas, our students are high achievers who attend a public charter school.
I see many students riding the metro home from school when I do and traveling long distances just to get to our school. The school has about 70-80% students on free or reduced lunch.
My Project
In the beginning of the school year my brand new art classroom seemed pretty well stocked despite the small budget given by the school. Halfway through the year, it is obvious that my materials have seen a lot of wear and tear. I have asked for simple classroom items such as crayons, watercolors, paint brushes, oil pastels, and pencil sharpeners. I have also requested a paper cutter. My current paper cutter is old and the handle is broken. It is very hard to run an art room without a paper cutter.
It is important that urban children have access to the same materials and opportunities to experience art as suburban children.
My students have gained lots of experiences thanks to Donorschoose in the past.
