My students are enthusiastic but often lack the motivation to work on their classwork. They also need support with English speaking and listening. Most are English Learners and are struggling in their English Language Arts class.
My students come from a diverse school in a large city.
Part of the school is a magnet with students from all over the city. My students, however, are comprised mainly of residential students from the local low-income neighborhood. Most are English Learners as well.
Shakespeare stands as a foundation of classic English Literature. As such, we read these two plays every year. "The Tempest" in 10th grade and "Romeo and Juliet" in 9th. They are two of the students favorite lesson units.
We read these plays every year and the students need easy to hold copies for class activities.
Also some of the versions provide modernized paraphrasing for the original text. This helps the struggling readers to understand Shakespeare's wonderful writing.
The students will read from these copies in class and then continue to use them for group discussions and follow up writing assignments.
