The Bard Comes to Sixth Grade

Help me give my students a love for the Bard. We will be reading the No Fear Shakespeare version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to ease sixth grade students into the world of Shakespeare.

My Project

My students are an enthusiastic, curious, and diverse group of 6th graders who thrive when literature feels vibrant and accessible. Many of them come from historically underfunded communities where access to personal libraries or modern learning materials is limited. Despite these challenges, they love diving into stories that challenge their perspectives and spark their creativity. They learn best when complex texts are paired with visual aids and modern formats that break down traditional barriers to classical literature.

This school year, my students will embark on an adventure into the magical forest of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

For most of my students, this will be their very first introduction to Shakespeare, which can often feel intimidating due to the archaic language. To ensure that every learner can fully engage with the story, I am requesting a class set of No Fear Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night's Dream. This is a modern translation of the play.

By providing texts that pair the original dialogue with modern language, my students will be able to easily track the comedic plot twists, magical transformations, and dramatic mix-ups. These books will allow us to read together as a community, assign parts to act out in class, and build vital reading comprehension skills.
