My Students

Should you fail a math class because your family can't afford to buy supplies? We are looking to help see our students succeed with new updated supplies.

Our school is located in San Francisco where it serves students in grades 9-12.

I work within the Special Education program where students are mainstreamed into algebra, advanced algebra, geometry and precalculus classes. Many students do not have the financial means at home to come to school with supplies to pass their classes; some do not have internet access at home as well. The calculators they carry usually are of the basic sort that do not have keys that include log, sin, cos and tan functions.

My Project

I entered a math class today and about half the students didn't have a scientific calculator, and therefore couldn't complete their assignment, causing them to become discouraged and apathetic to their coursework. With the supplies at school they will be able to complete assignments in class and at home. I would create a system where students would be able to check out the donated calculators for home use. Folders are essential in teaching a student structure. A highly organized folder/binder where class notes and work is kept can be taken home to provide aid. A folder may not seem like so much of a financial burden for a family but when coupled with other expenses such as food, rent and transportation many families do not see the importance of these academic folders so they do not feel the need to purchase them for their children. Protractors and graph paper will allow students to maintain a needed and well organized notebook.

I bring in my personal supplies everyday and it is shared or given out among students (if there is enough to go around) to complete assignments.

It would make a classroom more efficient since students would already have the materials that they might not be able to afford outside of school, and therefore hopefully inspire them to be more productive and willing to work.
