The students in my Exploring Computer Science class have been using it for a couple years now, and, predictably, they're completely obsessed. What started as simple curiosity quickly turned into heated debates over print speeds and layer heights.\r\n\r\nThe printer is now part of a setup where students are learning to design print files, troubleshoot, and occasionally realize they forgot to level the bed. They're discovering that turning digital files into physical objects takes a lot more patience (and failed prints) than expected—which is honestly the kind of lesson you hope for in a project like this.\r\n\r\nThey're gaining real skills in computing, design, and problem-solving. They're also learning that melting plastic into dragons and keychains is somehow the most motivating thing in the world.\r\n\r\nWe appreciate your support. The students are learning a lot—and occasionally even reading the manual—so I'd call that a win.","fullyFundedDate":1642963346243,"projectUrl":"project/exploring-cycles-of-design-and-productio/6074134/","projectTitle":"Exploring Cycles of Design and Production With a 3D Printer","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Kent","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7053555_orig.jpg?crop=2448,2448,x0,y408&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1640905458356","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7053555"},{"teacherId":7053555,"projectId":5725280,"letterContent":"This project successfully introduced students to the technical and collaborative skills behind drone piloting using two Tinyhawk 2 FPV drones. They learned how to set up, maintain, and race drones through the brutalist architecture of our campus overlooking Glen Canyon—arguably the perfect setting for futuristic flight and questionable decision-making.\r\n\r\nStudents were highly engaged. They developed real-world skills in engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork, all within a safe, semi-competitive environment. The excitement was palpable—perhaps a little too palpable.\r\n\r\nOne drone was flown with great enthusiasm, then ambition, then altitude. It is now presumed to be enjoying early retirement somewhere deep in Glen Canyon. The experience provided an excellent teachable moment on signal range, wind, and why most pilots have GPS.\r\n\r\nDespite the loss, the project achieved its goals: students were inspired, skills were built, and everyone now knows not to fly beyond line of sight—especially near a canyon.","fullyFundedDate":1638323247916,"projectUrl":"project/introduction-to-drone-racing/5725280/","projectTitle":"Introduction to Drone Racing","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Kent","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7053555_orig.jpg?crop=2448,2448,x0,y408&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1640905458356","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7053555"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_99136","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":265,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":49,"percentAsian":27,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":11,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":73.7,"schoolId":99136,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about The Academy-San Francisco at McAteer on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"The Academy-San Francisco at McAteer","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-francisco-unified-school-district/school-of-the-arts-high-school/99136"}
