The Autobiography of Malcolm X will be the fourth class novel that we will read in my 7th grade English classroom this year. It will be the first piece of "real" literature that we read. It is a book that will move my students from the more comfortable themes of teen issues and growing up to the more challenging ones of race, identity, politics, and creating social change. Changing the world is perhaps the most important theme of my classroom. Although my school is in the middle of Harlem, only a few blocks west from New York's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and a few blocks north from the famous sidewalks of 125th street, rarely, if ever, are the topics of race, politics, or social change treated with any depth at my school. At a school where the energy that is not focused on test preparation goes into keeping order in the classrooms, there is simply not enough time. I will make The Autobiography of Malcolm X relevant to all of my students--the half that are Dominican and Puerto Rican as well as the half that are black. We will critically examine the choices Malcolm X made and the lifestyles he chose. We will also critically examine his thought (with an eye toward deconstruction). Where did he draw the line between challenging the racial status quo and simply promoting racism? Where should we? I am asking for a class set of the Autobiography of Malcolm X. It will stimulate and provoke my class this year and my classes in many years to come. Thank you.
