The Artful Joy of Sewing for Middle School Students

Help me give my students sewing machines and accessory equipment so they can learn the art and skill of sewing at our middle school. I teach art to 300 middle schoolers who are hungry to sew!

My Project

My students come from lower socio-economic situations, many of whom are only here for a short time as their families have temporary work in our area. As a Title one school, nearly half of our students receive free and reduced lunch. My goal is to help provide my students with a diverse, and rich art educational experience that will also serve them through their life, whether they take another art class after mine or not. Sewing is definitely an activity that is a life-skill, as they have the knowledge to repair clothes and other fibers, but also a creative fine art.

We are a rural Wyoming school, with basic services, but a lot of passion for learning.

My art students are HUNGRY to learn how to sew on a sewing machine, and to take their skills beyond hand-embroidery and basic hand sewing. Life skills like sewing have gone the way most home-economics material has and are no longer being taught in school. As the art teacher, I've taught my students about hand sewing, and amazing artforms created by sewing, but we do not have any machines that we can use in our classroom. We would love to have your support of providing two quality sewing machines (and the necessary accessories to go with them) that we can use in our art room to make our projects. I am constantly emphasizing the joys of reinventing, or reinvigorating recycled and old materials to make new art. To be able to show my students how they can take old clothes and blankets and refresh them to create costumes and fashion designs, and to create artworks like soft sculptures and quilts could be transforming. Your support through the donation of this request will help us to reach our sewing dreams.
