Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach children with mild to moderate learning disabilities in a high-poverty school where all of our students receive free breakfast, healthy snacks, and lunch. Through no actions of their own, these kids have been dealt a hand that will make their school careers more challenging than for some children, in more ways than one.
The challenges that some of our students may face are a lack of resources, such as transportation, or other economic hardships that may result in their family becoming homeless.
Families in this situation may have to live with relatives or friends. Our students who find themselves in this situation are guaranteed attendance at our school, even being provided with bus fare so that they can make it to school daily, no matter where they are staying.
Our school is filled with hardworking, dedicated teachers and staff who meet the challenges of working with an at-risk population on a daily basis. We work very hard at creating a sense of community for our children, their parents, and of course the staff of our school. Thank you for your support in this endeavor!
My Project
Our resource room is a place for learning, and thanks to generous donors, we have iPads to help with the differentiated learning they need. We have been using Read Naturally Live, which is a motivating, non-fiction based reading program aligned with the Common Core standards. Students love the science and biography based stories they listen to and read.
Having the requested headphones will help my students further develop their reading fluency by allowing them to not only listen to fluent reading but also practice their own fluent reading.
While they are working on the writing component, those students who have great ideas but have difficulty with the art of writing will be able to dictate their predictions and their story retells after the repeated readings that are part of the program. Also, my students who need to listen to calming music during writing activities when they do not need to listen to text read aloud will be able to do so while not disturbing others.
I am also requesting digital watches for my students so that they know when to come to group. I still have upper elementary students who don't know when their group time actually begins and ends according to the analog clock on the classroom wall. With these watches and specific instruction in time-telling using the requested ink pad and our existing clock stamp, they will learn this valuable life skill.
