What can art tell us about history? Our students would love to become history detectives and uncover the stories behind works of art. We will be studying immigration to the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century. We hope to discover the past through art as a lens through which we can learn history.
My students attend a fifth grade public school in New York City, in the borough of Queens.
We live in one of the most diverse areas in the nation and our immigrant community speaks many languages reflective of the very immigration we will be studying. Our families expect public education to provide the best learning environment that will ensure a successful future for their children. Because we live in New York City and reflect the rich mosaic of cultures that make our city great, we try to take advantage of the resources available through the remarkable museums that offer education outreach. Our diversity is our wealth as we share our cultures within our school.
My Project
Immigration to the United States at the turn of the 20th century resonates with our students and their families because so many of our children come from all over the world. The New York Historical Society has a program that offers an in-depth exploration of art as a lens to examine history through a series of visits to schools. We would love to have a museum educator visit us and bring the perspective of how art can inform and tell stories. We would use various strategies learned from our museum visitor along with art resources to recreate art that constructs historical narratives. What fun to become hands-on history detectives delving into clues that can give context to the stories we we uncover.
This proposal would allow us to work with a museum educator from the NY Historical Society to explore how art can explain history.
This would be a wonderful opportunity for our students. New York City has been the gateway for many immigrants and our students would relate to this theme. Art can give voice to the immigrant experience working with this organization and our students would acquire a new context for understanding various periods of immigration to the United States.

(Over a series of 5 visits our NYHS educator will show students how to examine works of art and discuss how they reflect that period in history when compared to the historical evidence examined. They discuss the techniques, elements and principles of art observed in the works and explore a particular art medium artists have used, becoming familiar with its properties. )
