This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are AWESOME! I have so many great people I get to work with everyday! Many of my students are starting to reawaken to the great things life has to offer when we are invested in ourselves, our families, and the world around us. After some less-than-ideal decisions, many of my students are now understanding their value, how smart and powerful they are, and are making plans for their futures. I want to help them even more by showing them how both easy and difficult it can be to understand the world around them. Our high school is a Title I school, meaning many of my students have some financial and food insecurity.

Even with big stressors and life wrinkles, my students still get to school and have amazing days of connecting with people, focusing on their academics, and contributing to their families and jobs.

Most of my students have only seen films on television, in passing, or while eating and talking. Teaching them to understand the significance of well-made films as artistic presentations is wonderful! They love to learn to see films they have viewed, but with new eyes and a new perspective.

My Project

I am adding to the small collection of films for my Film Studies Class. We continually shift between pop-culture and classic artistic films, U.S. creations, and international cinema. These new films will continue to help me show them the wide array of techniques and points of view for a global understanding of the art and craft of film-as-literature.

For films such as La Lengua de las Mariposas (The Butterfly's Tongue) we focus on the common humanity shared between teachers and students, adults and children, the young and the old, but shown in the light of growing fascism and how a person either picks sides or passively allows bad things to happen to good people.

We also look at classic American Cinematic classics, such as Casablanca, paying close attention to the dialogue and how certain scenes intensify the relationship between characters through magnificent dialogue (see the linen-bartering scene for a pristine example of this).

Finally, we look at pop-culture films to investigate why people are drawn to certain stories. We uncover the foundational archetypes presented in films like Star Wars, and look at Joseph Campbell's paradigm of the hero's journey to help us understand what audience members connect with in these popular films.
