This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Nestled in our little corner of the 6th grade hallway, we are trying to navigate our way through the murky waters of middle school. Fifty-one new sixth-grade students are learning what it means to be a community that cares - cares about their teammates, their school, and their learning.

One way we are learning, is by exploring humanities through the arts.

We believe that art is a vital way to showcase the human experience and has been so throughout history. In our project based learning environment, we know students learn best by doing. My students are excited to create art while exploring history and the human desire to share stories.

My Project

With ten weeks left of school, we are combining science, humanities, and art. Students will learn about what causes earthquakes and other natural disasters in their science class while in humanities we will focus on historical accounts of disasters.

From disaster, students will create art.

Students will focus on the following essential questions in humanities class: What tools do I need to read historical writing? What is the difference between historical sources? What makes a reliable source? Why is it human nature to stop and look at the "train wreck"?

After studying different historical disasters and asking why people tend to be so fascinated with them, we will create paper cut scenes depicting these historical events. We would like a silhouette machine to help us cut out even more detailed scenes and learn how professionals in the field use these tools to better their craft.
