Being new to the Microbit world, what I have learned about Microbits is that they serve as a tool for students to connect their learning in computer science and apply it to something that they can hold in their hand. \r\n\r\nFor example, students were able to turn on LED lights on a 5x5 grid in various patterns. \r\nAt first, we started with dots, then moved to smiley faces and then on to scrolling words and numbers. What I saw with student engagement and reaction was so positive. Middle school students, whether they would openly admit it to their teacher or not, saw a connection from what they programmed on their computer to something they can hold onto and control. \r\n\r\nWhile I am new to Microbit, from what I am learning is that there are so many things we can do with this thing. We hope to take advantage of the motion sensor, sound output, button input and more. Thank you so much for your help, especially General Motors, in making computer science less scary and more engaging and hands on for my students.","fullyFundedDate":1742937669366,"projectUrl":"project/coding-comes-alive-with-microbit/9203539/","projectTitle":"Coding Comes Alive with Microbit","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Ko","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1067913_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y394&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1629755223063","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/koteach"},{"teacherId":8815460,"projectId":9240445,"letterContent":"The kids are so excited about these new books.\r\n\r\nI have had so many requests for the teen drama books and they love the \"new book smell.\" Their excitement means that we have book peer pressure to maintain reading.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting literacy for the ipad generation! One of the most engaging activities we've done was a cheek swab cell lab, where students collected their own epithelial cells, stained them with potassium iodide, and observed them under the microscope. Seeing their own cells for the first time sparked curiosity and excitement, making abstract concepts like organelles and cell structures more tangible. They carefully identified the nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell membrane, reinforcing their learning in a way that reading a textbook never could.\r\n\r\nBeyond the cheek swab lab, students have had opportunities to explore the microscopes more independently, building their confidence in adjusting focus, changing magnification, and properly handling slides. Many have taken the initiative to examine various prepared slides, from plant cells to microorganisms, making connections between different types of cells and their functions. This hands-on experience has not only strengthened their scientific observation skills but has also nurtured a sense of wonder about the microscopic world. Thanks to the support of our donors, my students have been able to engage in meaningful, inquiry-based learning that brings science to life in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1730301095760,"projectUrl":"project/what-are-you-made-of-pt-2/8689305/","projectTitle":"What Are You Made Of? pt. 2","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Emily","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9545679_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725323398268","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-emilym"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_101964","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":335,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":13,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":71,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.6,"schoolId":101964,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about High Tech Middle Chula Vista on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"High Tech Middle Chula Vista","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/california-department-of-education/high-tech-middle-chula-vista/101964"}
