Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Recently we read a story about ants and my students surprised me by saying that they want to be just like ants. Here are the reasons they thought about. Ants are the model of teamwork! These hardworking insects live mostly in colonies and work together as a team. Ants are the smartest insects. It has been estimated that an ant's brain may have the same processing power as a Macintosh computer. They are also considerate creatures. Whenever ants find food, they carry it back to the colony to share. We want to build the same atmosphere of consideration, helpfulness, and compassion in our class as well. How can I help my students to grow socially and academically? Most of my second grade students are Hispanic and from non-English speaking low-income families. Because parents have language barriers, many of my students do not have enough practice at home. But they are so bright and intelligent!

My students like to work in groups. Using educational games for group practice makes difficult concepts easy to grasp…and provides tons of involving, hands-on math practice at a variety of levels! Daily math group activities are the perfect way for my second graders to practice their academic skills and build truly supportive relationships towards each other.

The games that I selected will help enhance important math concepts while pairing coins and bills with their numeric values, matching up analog and digital time at different intervals, exploring place value in ones, tens and hundreds…and more. I want to have these materials available to them, and hope to see how working as a team of learners will bring up their self-esteem and confidence to achieve goals they set for themselves.

If this proposal is funded, our students will be given an opportunity to get focused practice in the key areas including number sense, operations, measurement, etc. But most important, they can work as friendly ants building class culture where everyone share what ever they get - knowledge, happiness, and self-confidence! I want them to be excited about building academic skills as they follow along with interesting activities. If you choose to fund this project, my second grade students will benefit from your generosity for many years to come. Thank you in advance!
