Students at Westlane Middle School are involved in a contest called the Amazing Read. For every book a student reads, his or her "Amazing Read" team moves forward 100 miles on our map of the world. With a school of almost 900 students we are in need of prizes for the winning team for each grade as well as smaller prizes for each team as it gets to makes it to each way point. The smaller prizes could be things such as food items or books while I'd like to see the bigger item be something as special as a visit to a local bookstore with each child getting a gift certificate to spend $10 on a book for him or herself.
As the Middle School Media Specialist I have organized the team of teachers who run this program, and am in charge of publicity and the acquisition of prizes. Students visit the Media Center at least once a month to update their reading records, and then the team moves forward. The final goal is for each team to read 330 books, taking them all the way around the world. The way around isn't straight; they are visiting places that are related in someway to the curriculum that they study. There are also pit stops, detours and fast forwards along the way.
We are keeping track of each team's progress on a large map in the front of the Media Center. The emphasis on reading will help students become better readers!
