This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our sixth grade students collectively have a diverse background. We constantly engage in deep discussions about current and historical events and how different points of view should be heard and critically examined.

Sixty eight percent of students at our school qualify for free and reduced rate lunch and 40% of them are English Language Learners, which gives our classrooms many perspectives.

I want to give each one of them opportunities to express their skills and opinions in safe, creative ways that they may not normally get.

My Project

I will be teaching small groups of students at a time so that they can receive more hands-on experience and individual attention in a kitchen setting. We will be practicing basic cooking techniques using measurement tools, equivalent ratios and proportions, recipes, and accuracy (specifically in cooking). We will also be discussing nutritional awareness at home and at school.

With these cooking supplies, I hope to enrich my students' skills they might not currently have and can use for the rest of their lives.

I want to make sure that they can succeed in this necessary survival skill as well as increase their level of responsibility from set up to clean up.
