My students need psychrometers, a barometer, a water cycle model, and a cloud apparatus to assist in the hands-on learning of weather and the atmosphere!
The Sun disappears in the thick, gray clouds,the thunder BOOMS, a bright flash lights up the sky! The downpour tumbles from the heavens as you run for cover.
Each day, my students encounter the weather. They see it, feel it, experience it; but they do not understand it. Weather should be hands-on!
My students are a curious group of suburban adolescent learners.
They have recently experienced a failed referendum and have seen class sizes rise, sometimes double. The reduction in budget has limited our ability to purchase supplies. The science standards also changed this year, and we are left with supplies that we can no longer use. My students are lovers of hands-on activities and thrive in the lab. I want to continue to afford my students the invaluable opportunity to truly experience what I teach. This opportunity is crucial to their success in so many ways.
My Project
How cool will it be to actually watch a cloud form right before your eyes! We see them in the sky every day, but understanding how clouds got there is a whole new experience. I can see it already, parents emailing to tell me how excited their child was to be able to see and explain this phenomenon. The cloud apparatus that I am requesting will help my students ultimately experience the world around them.
My students listen to the weather man, but what is he saying? With the use of the psychrometers and barometer, my students can make the measurements themselves and maybe even predict before the weatherman does! What? The pressure is dropping on our aneroid barometer? The atmospheric pressure must be falling. I bet it's going to rain!
