Our school has been going through some things, but we're turning it around! One of our initiatives is reigniting the love for science, and more importantly the students' love for the environment by re-establishing a school garden and taking it a GIANT step further by adding a "farm"!
The mission is farm-to-table... Our students will develop this backyard farm and garden themselves with the use of the stools, chicken coop, composter, and other materials.
The students will build, plant, cultivate, plan, market, and ultimately profit from their hard work! The profits would be used to pour back into our garden and farm. With guidance from city partnerships, high school mentors, and hands-on learning our kids will gain a greater sense of autonomy, confidence, and leadership.
The NGSS standards we'll explore are energy, ecosystems, interdependent relationships, growth, analysis, research, data interpretation, and so much more!
-LS1.C: Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms
-MS-LS1-5. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the
growth of organisms.
-MS-LS2-3. Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an
ecosystem.
-L.8.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues,
building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. (MS-LS2-2)
-SL.8.4 Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details;
use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation. (MS-LS2-2)
Our students need this and I can't wait to see this happen for them. Thank you.
