My Students
Actors need plays, great plays. As a brand new theater program in an urban school our students have no budget and a very small classroom library. The scripts we do have are not of any quality. Give our students access to some of the greatest American plays ever written by funding this project.
My students are from a very high needs background but they love to perform.
A typical member of my theater program will be an active learner, a natural performer, or even the class clown. When given the opportunity to take the stage they shine. Our school has over 500 students and roughly half will take a theater class over the course of the year. The school has zero budget for arts programs but does support teachers who can work within those terms. We have never had a theater program before last year so this is a brand new opportunity for our students. The students are so grateful to have access to new materials because it is such a rare option.
My Project
These volumes encompass some of the greatest American plays and playwrights. Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder and Neil Simon are all giants of the American stage. Having students perform sections from these plays will exponentially increase their acting experience and their knowledge of the theatre cannon. The greatest part about these book is that they typically contain more than one play by a particular playwright.
Actors that are not exposed to great play never know what they are missing.
The earlier in life one encounters these great dramas the more likely they are to fall into a lifetime love of the stage. Help me start this classroom library so that everyone who enters into this class will have access to great plays.
