My Students

We work at a school that, while on the surface would seem like a typical suburban school, it is not. Our school has a high percentage of students on free or reduced lunch and a high percentage of students where English is a second language. So many of our students come to us with a lot of gaps to fill in their learning.

While some would view this as being disadvantaged and would feel defeated, our students are determined and hard working.

They do the best they can on a daily basis. One little 3rd grader came to our school with reading and math skills on a 1st grade level, after a couple of weeks of hard work, this child mastered a skill she had been struggling with for quite some time. She was so proud of herself and was ready to take on the next skill because she knows she can do it.

My Project

Brain research tells us that there are many types of learners. Some learn through seeing and others through just hearing. Young students learn primarily through interacting with objects and play. They love to get their hands into something and make discoveries. When it comes to learning the alphabet, there are only so many ways a child can physically interact with letters written on a piece of paper.

Our goal is for students to squish, build, dig for, and unlock the alphabet.

With the materials that are being requested, it will allow our students learning the alphabet and letter sounds to have hands on play experiences that will enrich their education.
