My students need a class set of Sherman Alexi's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. This is a very important and powerful narrative that brings students to new levels of thinking about diversity.
Our students are a wonderful diverse mix of cultures and classes. Our community in general truly supports our families, and the families support the community. This support causes compassionate and responsible students.
We are nestled sweetly in a mix of ocean coast and redwood forests where many of our kids are immersed in nature, sports, and art.
Our student body is one of the finest in the world. Rich or poor, our students are kind and smart and want to do the best they can for their community, country, and world.
My Project
Reading, discussing, and writing brings humans to a new level of thinking and awareness. Every time I introduce powerful stories to my students, it never fails to amaze me how they reach out and contribute important feedback and reflection in regards to the human experience.
Sherman Alexie's book The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian offers very important events and reflections about class, racism, social expectations, and the growing pains of being a teen Native American.
The story is also very engaging, so students will gain reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Students will be writing daily about the events in the plot. They will collaborate and use technology to publish their writing. Students will also engage in rigorous discussions and participate in intense, but diplomatic debates. At the end of the unit, they will produce an essay and TED Talk about an important social and or political issues.
The exploration of this novel with supplemental readings and reflective writing will definitely further students reading, writing, and thinking abilities. It is because of powerful learning opportunities like this, that I am so in love with teaching!
