Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently work in a extremely low-income area where our middle school students come to school with a variety of difficulties. Almost 85% of our school is considered "at-risk" of not graduating due to their poverty stricken circumstances. Over 90% of our population is Hispanic and many are limited in their English proficiency.
However, I am not here to talk about our problems; I am here to try to provide the best learning environment for them as I possibly can.
These students are in great need in every aspect of their lives: love, compassion, patience, and a genuine learning environment. They can be a rough bunch, but through discipline, fairness and compassion, I have been able to reach out to many of my students and realize their needs. I have been working at the same school for eleven years and I have loved every single challenging minute of it. These students absolutely deserve a teacher who loves what she does and I deserve the students that I have seen them become under my watch. Although my students have been handed a tough hand in life, their resiliency continues to amaze me.
My Project
My students have so much more to worry about than pencils...our school is no longer giving out pencils this year and I've been trying to hoard the ones that I do have. However, I have been giving pencils to fellow teachers in need so I'm running a little low.
Since my class is a writing class that is STAAR tested, my students are constantly doing sentence work and working on essays.
These pencils and erasers are much needed in my class. The red pens will be used as a class set when my students do peer-editing in the classroom. I was super lucky to get a project funded last year for pencils so I'm hoping I get lucky again. I have requested the black Ticonderoga pencils because they are high quality, last longer, and are easily identifiable as mine. My students will use these pencils down to the very last and they are never, ever wasted!
