My Project

The various titles in this project will enable the school Literacy Team to spread the reach of third annual novel study to our youngest and oldest readers.

For the past two years, all students in grades K-8 have read, listened to and created projects around the school's chosen novel.

Our first novel in 2022 was Finding Langston by Lesa Cline-Ransome and in 2023 we read Save Me A Seat by Sarah Weeks. Our students enjoyed listening to the novel or following along in their own copy (grades 3-8). This year we want to be sure that our youngest readers can access the big ideas of our chosen novel (it's a great book but we are keeping it a secret until the schoolwide reveal!) while engaging with related picture books.

The two picture books, 52 A Tale of Loneliness and The Heart of a Whale are stories that will engage our kindergarten through second graders with the knowledge about the 52 Hertz Whale in a developmentally appropriate content. The informational books about whales as well as hearing impairements will also develop students' knowledge of the novel's main ideas.

Since we are trying to promote awareness of abilities and those differently-abled, the graphic novel, El Deafo will help engage our older readers with the concept of deafness or hearing impairements in humans. These books would be available in homeroom classrooms in grades 3-8 so students can explore this topic further.

These books would enhance our annual school Reads Project with multiple connections to world knowledge.
