The 25 Books You Should Read Before Leaving Middle School

My students need to have their original bookmarks copied onto cardstock.

My Students

Which 25 books should you read before you die? This bookmark inspired my colleagues and I to ask our middle school students which 25 books they should you read before leaving middle school (and why). But what should we do with the results?

Well, we thought a bookmark would be a wonderful way to share their thoughts and artistic abilities with their peers and the larger school community.

Our students are 6th, 7th and 8th graders who come from urban and sometimes poverty stricken homes. All kids have a desire to learn and share their creativity, but often, with the rigorous testing preparation, creativity gets cast aside. Our hope is that this project, a collaboration between the Librarian, Language Arts Teacher, and Art Teacher, will inspire our students to read, think about what they’re reading, and also stretch their artistic abilities.

My Project

The first step in our project will be to have students come up with a list of 25 books that are a must-read before leaving middle school. We propose to have each student write down 5 must-read titles (and why). By requiring students to qualify they’re choices, we hope to provide a critical lens to their reading choices. The top choices (those with the most votes) will make it to the list. We’d like to print the results on a bookmark for every student to have so the art teacher can help students create a bookmark design. The designs will be entered in a contest and the best design will become the back of the bookmark. Once the two parts of the bookmark are complete, we hope to have the resulting bookmark printed for the entire school. We don't have the capability of printing these on our own and would need to do this at a print shop which is beyond our means given the current school budget crisis.

This project will excite students about their reading choices and also allow them to flex their creative muscles.

It will show them how important it is to work together – as this project will include at least 3 areas of learning for our students: Language Arts, Visual Art, and the Library. Finally, all students will walk away with a reading list in their hands and a product they can be proud of and cherish.
