This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How much do you enjoy hearing a story being read aloud to you? My students often ask me to read another story the second I finish reading one to them; they love hearing different voices and listening to rich, fluent writing. Personalizing this experience can be a wonderful treat as a choice activity!

My students are primarily English Language Learners who desire to become fluent in English and competitive in their academics.

They come from a school whose population is about 81% Hispanic, 12% Black and 5% White and where 90% of students are eligible for a free or reduced-price lunch (NCES 2008-2009). The students at my school need a lot of attention perhaps as a result of the little they receive at home due to overworked parents/guardians. When they come to school, they are charged sponges ready to receive positive reinforcements and praise for their accomplishments. The students are eager to expand their knowledge and share their experiences with others. They aspire to attend college and be successful citizens in our community.

My Project

The resources I have requested will alter my students' self-concepts as proficient listeners and skilled story-tellers. They will gain a sense of literary talent when they begin comprehending texts better and learning how to read fluently with expression and prosody. Students will be able to use the cd players to listen to stories in cd or mp3 format at a place in the classroom of their choice, considering its portability. The mobile listening centers will be an incentive to complete classroom work on time, or earlier. I already have three voice recorders in my classroom. Students will be encouraged to practice a story of their choice and record it when the he or she feels ready. These recordings can simply be transferred to a cd that can be listened to by that student or other students in the classroom. Just put it in a Ziploc bag with the book and it is ready to go! Students will be empowered by the energy of read aloud and have an opportunity to practice language as stars!

Donations to this project will make a difference in the way I conduct my literacy centers and the way students view the literacy components of reading, listening and speaking.

This project can have an effect on student success for the remainder of the year and be utilized in the years to come. My students will become more fluent in the skills of language as they practice independently and take ownership of their responsibilities. I would love for my students to have this opportunity!
