This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my class this year I have a group of students who cannot name one book they have really loved. They barely remember the names of the books they read last week, so the search is on for books that will inspire them to really read, as well as remember for a lifetime.
My students, who are all English Language Learners and live in severe poverty, are faced with challenges on a daily basis.
These challenges make it difficult for them to be focused and committed to learning, thus reading poses a new unnecessary obstacle.
My Project
I want my students to love reading. I want them to know the pleasure and joy that comes from reading a really good book. These resources will do just that. My plan is to use these materials for book clubs. Students will work closely with me to read and discuss literature. Having them participate in book clubs will let them see the thrill of speaking to others about books, while getting the on-going scaffolded support to ensure comprehension from me. Moreover, these books will also serve as base for extended language rich activities that will help my students advance in terms of acquiring English as a Second Language.
Supporting this project is supporting literacy skills that will last a lifetime for this group of children and others like them in future months.
More importantly, this project will get students to say, "This is such a great book!"
