Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Oh, you teach in the town with the Federal Prison," is the sympathetic reply I get from others when they ask where I teach. We have ninety-six percent students on free or reduced lunch, and the main source of employment for parents is a local prison. Some families even move here to be close to family that may be incarcerated here. Regardless of what our parents do, we teach our students they are unique, gifted, and we enable them to make wise choices. It's true, our school has fewer opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities, and the only local park is in the same lot as the local prison! Our students have higher poverty rates and we are somewhat behind wealthier areas in our district. Our students have the capabilities to thrive as high as their local peers, but we can't help but think what other schools with more resources are doing. The only difference is resources!
My Project
I teach students about the importance of eating more nutritional foods, but I found many students aren't getting enough fruits and veggies. In a class discussion one day, several students kept saying they didn't like fruits and vegetables, but when I asked if they'd tried certain ones, they said they had not. This inspired me to have campus-wide crock pot healthy recipe taste tests where we sample one another's recipes that include fruits and veggies. We will also have taste tests of healthy, low-fat on the go snacks students can eat instead of sugary snacks they are used to.
How will students know they don't like healthy foods if they don't try them?
We'll challenge classes to create a healthy crock pot recipe. We chose to use crock pots due to time shortages for parents and staff alike. We will print out winning recipes for families. Every student that enters the challenge will get a pencil. We will sample other classrooms' healthy entries, and also the healthy treats requested. We will also have contests to see which students are getting in their 60 minutes per day of healthy activities and physical fitness breaks. Winners, and they're all winners, will receive extra brain breaks in the classroom such as school and campus walks where they shake their ribbons and count their steps. This will build fitness minutes daily, and be fun!
Students will also get to learn more about nutrition through the nutritional centers, and through skits by our Destination Imagination Health Team. Students will have such fun sharing their recipes and teaching their peers about healthy ingredients! Our taste tests will be campus wide, encouraging every student and teacher to join in on the shaking and baking for nutritional tasting!
