My students need collections of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock for study. They only have pictures and websites. They need to feel the texture and understand the weight and density of these three types of rocks.

My Students
My gifted science students are constantly seeking answers to their world. They love to learn about the Earth and space. My students work in small groups many times throughout the day. I feel this helps them to understand that they will become model citizens of our country. They come in to my classroom wanting to learn about their world. they have so many questions. My goal is to help my students learn more about their world and and take that knowledge into high school and beyond.
My Project
My students study and explore rocks, the rock cycle and plate tectonics as part of this year's curriculum. As part of our state standards, they must know the similarities and differences between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. At this point, we study rocks by using pictures, videos and descriptions. My students need to see, feel, and in some cases, smell these rocks to fully appreciate the texture, density and mineral make up of the rocks with new rock collections. By actually holding these rocks, my students will be able to understand the similarities and differences between these three types of rocks. My students can really 'Rock' their learning!
