That Kid's Just Like Me! English-Learner Experience Books

My students need 18 books about children who are learning English in school, just like they are.

My Students

We teach students to make connections to the struggles and triumphs of the characters in books they read. But most of the time, children's literature doesn't portray English Language Learners. These books would give my students a deserved feeling of connectedness: that kid's just like me!

My students are all learning English as a second language at school.

They all come from families of low socioeconomic status and most of their parents do not speak much English at all. Our school is public and we are severely overcrowded. Despite all this, we work together- students, families, and teachers- to raise and enrich the lives of these amazing kids!

My Project

Here is a clear example of the amazing good this collection of books will do: I borrowed the book "My Name is Jorge on Both Sides of the River" and read it with a class of students. When I asked if they had connections to people mispronouncing their names, which come from numerous languages and countries, hands shot up in the air! They were so excited to share about this common struggle. We agreed that people deserve to have their name said correctly. The native English speakers in the class learned a great lesson, too: sometimes, you have to ask how to say someone's name and make sure you say it right! The sense of community and connectedness in the classroom improved immediately after reading the book, now a room full of smiles of understanding and acceptance.

These books are so important to my students because they will finally see themselves in the literature we read.

Every child deserves that. They deserve to be engaged by books that portray English Language Learners in a positive light. Their English-speaking classmates will see that they are not so "different," but that ELLs do face different challenges. I can't wait to share these powerful books with my students!
