This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a NYC teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district in the South Bronx, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My students are on the autism spectrum and are enrolled in a specialized school. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things predictable and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Teaching children with autism to comprehend text can be challenging.
Students with autism have difficulty to make text-to-self connections which is a stepping stone in comprehending a leveled text. My students benefit from a text that they have prior knowledge for so they can access and make mental images. Utilizing graphic organizers is an effective method for increasing their comprehension. My students lack the type of story books that they can access prior knowledge and practice making text to self connections.
My Project
These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-I take notice to their activities inside and outside of the classroom. As children in the Bronx, they have different experiences and interest than other children. These books will allow them to make connections to the text!
By donating to our project, you will not only help provide enjoyable stories to us, you will ultimately help to increase our ability to make text to self connections and reading comprehension.
