Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach tenth-grade, Intensive Reading in a large district in Central Florida. This school is labeled as a Title One school, meaning that the school receives additional funding because of the poverty in the area. The town is known to have many non-English speaking citizens. One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, with many getting backpacks of food to take home on the weekends. Many families are homeless, live in a hotel, or share housing with another family. The students are underprivileged but eager to learn. The students are kind and respectful towards me. Most of the students are the first in their families to graduate high school or attend college.
The students that come through my doors are willing to learn every day.
I have a great group of students that choose to make the right choices and complete assignments. We have fun in the classroom while learning the necessary standards.
Having a positive environment around campus can influence the students to make the right choice and brighten their day.
My Project
Reading can be very boring for most students, especially when the text does not interest the student. With colored pencils, the students will be able to connect with the text by marking it for their understanding.
Text marking is an important strategy in order for the students to understand the text.
Marking the text can consist of underlining, circling, or highlighting.
The purpose of text marking is for the student to connect with the text and understand that different texts have different features and purposes. Each color of text marking represents a different purpose, i.e. underline unknown words with red, topic sentence in green, and supporting details in red.
