This STEM project is requesting a small colony of termites for the Earth Science students. The termites will help students understand more about termite and social insect interaction. The termites will be used as an investigative study of the social behavior and hierarchy of the termite and the colony in which it resides. Students will draw ink trails and watch the live termites' behavior.
Students should discover that live termites leave a pheromone trail so the others in their colony will know where to go!
Interestingly, some inks mimic pheromones. They will compare different brands of pens and inks.
I have also included snacks to enjoy after these activities. Won't you help us with this study showing that although termites are damaging to homes and buildings, this insect is essential in the environment?
