My students need 30 pedometers so they can collect and analyze data while improving their health.

My Students
Thirty percent of American school age children are overweight. The average child spends 5 1/2 hours each day on media driven activities like watching T.V. That's shocking and I want to do something about it.
My students are enthusiastic fourth and fifth graders in a highly capable program.
I teach math to this incredible group of students and look for ways to make math both meaningful and engaging. I want to use pedometers to teach my students about statistics while improving their health.
My Project
I would like my students to collect their own personal data on the number of steps they walk each day over a ten week period. Students will analyze their data by making graphs and tables and by compare their results week by week using mean, median and mode. The emphasis will be to improve their individual activity level and to monitor their progress towards the goal of 10,000 steps each day. Parents, brothers, sisters and teachers will be encouraged to participate as well.
I would like to also challenge my students to combine their steps and walk across the United States before the school year is over.
This added motivation will inspire students to increase their walking and will be a fun way to end the year.
