My students need supplies like nesting boxes, a plant stand with lights and art supplies to complete their Disney Planet Challenge project on Temperate Forest Habitat.

My Students
Nine hundred trees in our local state park are being cut down due to disease. My students are concerned about the animals, insects and birds that make their home in this temperate forest habitat.
My students are enthusiastic fourth grade students in a highly capable program.
They are natural leaders and feel passionately about protecting their environment. They are devastated by the destruction of these old trees and want to do something for the animals that are losing their homes.
My Project
My students have decided that they want to raise their own tree seedlings. They will need a grow light table to do this. By nurturing their own trees, they will make a special connection and feel a deep sense of pride when they plant their own trees to replace some of those that were cut down. Along with the seedlings, my class also will build and monitor bird nesting boxes to be placed around our playground among the trees. To educate the other classrooms about how important trees are to the survival of other animals, they will be going to the kindergarten classrooms and reading from the big book "Life in a Tree." Finally each student will make a graphite embossing emphasizing the beauty of trees and listen to forest stories from around the world.
This environmental project will not only inspire my students to become activists in their local community, but will also encourage them to value forests and perhaps seek a career protecting the environment.
