My students are incredible. Being part of an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP) school community has helped my students grow into incredibly caring, reflective, and empathetic individuals who want to make the world a better place through inquiry and action. Every day, my students are working on developing their understanding of universal concepts like reflection, perspective, and responsibility.
My school is an incredibly diverse place, and this diversity makes it a unique, vibrant place for students to learn and grow.
Students are from a range of backgrounds. Some come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, while others are living in more financially secure households. About a third of my students are Latino; another third are black or Somali; another third are white. About a third of my students are English language learners (ELLs). Many are considered advanced learners in need of advanced differentiation.
My Project
Children should get to explore and express their learning in creative, hands-on ways that lead to inquiry and action. Our Sharing The Planet unit, which focuses on WATER, gives students the chance to do just that.
With these materials, which include a huge range of craft supplies, students will plan and create a stop motion video of the water cycle, in which THEY will be water in its various forms!
I will split the students into four groups, each group representing one stage of the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and accumulation).
Requested materials include a large white sheet for a backdrop, various craft supplies, and books for student reference. Students will use the requested materials to create their storyboards; design costumes and a set ; and film, direct and act in their group's part of the video. 1-2 group members will "act" in the video as a form of water, while another will take on the role of director, verbally coaching their actor to pose just right for the stage of the water cycle. The video will be filmed from the ceiling downward, so students will need to consider perspective when planning.
This video will serve as a provocation into a discussion on water as a resource. Why is access to water so inequitable? How can clean drinking water be provided to those who do not have it?
This project was inspired by a project my students and I did with our art resident last year. The result was incredible, and I'm excited to give students this amazing digital storytelling experience once again! In this process, students will get to collaborate, see their ideas through from start to finish, and express themselves creatively.
