My Students
My sixth grade students are special because they are unique and extremely talented. I currently teach at a performing and fine arts school where students are required to participate in an audition process and be accepted into the school. Many of my students are first generation American students and come from backgrounds that range. About 95% of the students I teach receive free and reduced lunch. Although many of them live in poverty and lack the resources needed to be academically successful they strive to balance core courses and electives.
My students are special because they are motivated to beat the odds.
Many of the students live in single parent homes where parents spend a majority of their time at work in order to provide for their children. Students do not always have the support at home to receive help with homework and to build on concepts learned in school. Parents have expressed difficulty in helping with homework because they themselves lack the skills. As an educator, I am dedicated to helping my students beat the odds by creating a platform where parents and teachers can connect in order to challenge our students to be all that they can.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting, tablets, clip on microphones, and tripods, will assist in creating a student driven learning environment that fosters a sense of community and encourages scholars to share their stories with students around the world. Scholars will first participate in a novel study centered around the memoir Bad Boy by Walter Dean Myers. While reading the memoir, students will participate in analytical discussions that will strengthen their critical reading skills.
The project will provide the scholars with an opportunity to employ elements of fiction in order to bring their stories to life.
After writing a memoir of their own and participating in the peer editing process, students will use the tablets, microphones and tripods to record their memoirs and upload to a student created blog.
Lastly, the materials requested will be used throughout the academic year for students to create how-to videos using the New Jersey's Student Learning Standards to teach reading and writing strategies to their classmates and peers around the world.
