This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every child has a story to tell but not everyone has the time to listen. One way to make anyone listen is through art, and as the saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words".

My school has a large population of Spanish speaking students.

They love art because it allows them to relax, create, communicate and get a much needed break from the rigors of learning English. My students come from homes where both parents work hard and long hours, and because of this, they have to help out at home either helping a younger sibling or doing light housework. Most do not have art materials and a time of their own to be creative.

My Project

Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell is an art exhibit presently at the Brooklyn Museum, that shows the people used in his art, first in photos then paint from his tight knitted home town community. My students will learn how to paint a portrait of themselves in the style of Rockwell that expresses who they are, what they like to do, what their belief/dreams might be. The painting experience helps to create a working safe, loving art community, that uses paintings, not words to communicate. When the project is finished, and exhibited in the school, my students will then get to view the Rockwell exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. The art materials will be much appreciated!

To see the joy on my students faces when I say we are painting on "good" white paper and canvases says it all!

I need paint and paper and this donation will help so much for my Norman Rockwell study. My students will appreciate the experience of doing and the surprise visit to the museum.
