This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students are catching up on their lab skills and experience communicating about science. They need more experience asking practical questions about the properties and composition of matter, for example, "What's the density of aluminum vs. copper and how else do these elements differ?" or "What makes lithium a good element to use in my battery?" Chemistry's challenges touch on important citizen and career competencies.

Donations to this project will enable students to develop experiments, communicate scientifically and apply methods for comparing and contrasting various elements and compounds.

Their findings provide a personally initiated basis for understanding the properties of matter.

The water displacement method used by Archimedes to determine the density of the king's gold crown using a scale is inspiration for students to design their own density experiments. They need good scales for that, preferably ones which would measure to the nearest tenth of a gram. Your donation provides them with scales for finding mass.

Mendeleev made cards to create his Periodic Table after awakening: "I saw in a dream a table where all the elements fell into place as required." Element cards allow students to sort and organize the elements according to their physical and chemical properties. They can try out and discuss the Periodic Law by comparing their models to the accepted periodic table.

These scales and element cards are the tools that will start conversations and debates in class. Students will thank you for providing the opportunity to build their science communication skills.
