This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a middle school math teacher, I put much effort in preparing my students for the responsibility that high school can bring. I push my students to be critical thinkers, be responsible for their actions, and value their learning experience. I want my students to have a passion for mathematics and break down the stereotypes that only certain people are "math people."

Our middle school is a writing-based charter school in a diverse, urban community.

Our ultimate goal for our students is to be resilient, lifelong learners who strive to further their knowledge. I am always looking for ways to incorporate writing instruction within mathematics. At our site, we take pride in the benefits of a rigorous writing program within all content areas.

My Project

Many of my students have not stepped foot into a classroom in over a year. With this, all teachers are thinking through how we can make this year the most welcoming, enjoyable experiences for our students. I believe that one of the ways to do this is incorporating some hands-on, low stakes, artistically driven activities. And as students get older, we tend to lose out on these hands-on, non-standardized times.

Teenagers, more than ever, are craving these hands-on artistic experiences with their peers.

I am hopeful these activities can be a way to lessen the social anxieties that I'm sure are on my students' minds walking into the new school year. And let's face it, who doesn't love some calming art time with friends!
