Teenage Snack Attack!

Help me give my students a variety of snacks to sustain them while studying and taking exams and supplies to clean up after themselves and keep our science classroom hygienic.

My Students

My school serves students in grades 9-12 in a low-income area in Hawaii. I work with the awesome sophomore biology students. My students are lively, creative, and inquisitive. They are a diverse group of kids who participate in a variety of sports and extracurricular activities, such as surfing, hiking, paddling, acting, singing, and dancing.

My school is located on the small island of Kauai and many of my students live at or below the poverty level.

Despite the many challenges they face, my students love to learn. I am always amazed at their creativity and artistic talent. They particularly excel in hands-on projects and labs. I work hard to prepare my students for life after high school. My hope is to provide a comfortable classroom where I can actively engage my students and create a safe environment that promotes learning.

My Project

Many of my students need extra help with their science work. At my school, all teachers are required to offer tutoring at the end of the school day at least once/week. I usually have students come in for assistance or to make-up labs twice a week... and they are always HUNGRY! I also have students that arrive to take their biology "End of Course Exam" (standardized test) without having eaten breakfast and/or lunch. I try to keep granola bars on hand, but I often run out.

I would like to be able to provide my students with snacks that will fuel them for success.

I am hoping that having a variety of snacks on hand will help motivate my students to stay longer at tutoring and accomplish more.

In addition to having snacks, there are special circumstances to take into consideration for the science classroom. Both before and after they eat in class, the students need to make sure their space is properly sanitized, so having cleaning supplies would be a huge help.
