Our school is unique in that it serves highly gifted students from grade 3 through grade 8. We are small and we are a family.
Our middle school students are dedicated, hard-working, and they each have a unique perspective and a variety of needs.
It is vital that my team and I utilize a variety of learning strategies, group work, alternative seating, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met on a daily basis. There very rarely is a single approach or strategy that works for every student and we are constantly learning and innovating to provide what each of them deserves. They are truly remarkable.
As we try to meet the academic demands of this special population of middle schoolers, it is increasingly important to also address their social and emotional needs. We now have weekly, multi-grade, advisory meetings where students learn a variety of soft skills and get to know their classmates from other grade levels. In addition, we have implemented weekly recess when technology is not allowed and the students are encouraged to move or exercise while enjoying the fresh air.
Working with such amazing tweens and teens is an incredibly rewarding challenge.
My Project
Many middle schools no longer offer time during the week for the students to be outside and play. Play and fresh air is especially important at this age considering their ever increasing use of technology. Recognizing this need, we have sacrificed academic class time to provide a weekly recess time to each of our middle schoolers. Please help us to provide and maintain appropriate equipment that will encourage physical activity during the outdoor time we provide. Our current balls are well-used, donated items that are falling apart or are designed for elementary students. We need help to encourage these kids to be ACTIVE teen titans!
