Teen Books Second Attempt to get Half Off Funding from AKJ

My students need class sets of high interest TEEN BOOKS, including "Orphan of the Sun" and "Tamar," that are age appropriate. Although we have a school library, most of the books there are geared toward the younger students.

My Students

My students are avid readers, this year and I promised them that I would work hard to get high level books of interest for them to read. As a teacher I love hearing a student 'groan' when I say that silent reading time is over and beg for more time.

I teach 8th grade in a small inner city neighborhood public school, there are only 45 students in the 8th grade.

Our students are culturally diverse with a break down of 36% Latinos, 28.8% African American, 14% Caucasian, and 15.3% Asian. My students are a very energetic group of young adults that all get along well with each other and the faculty and staff. Most of my students have been at our school since Pre-K and have siblings in our building. They consider our school their second home. Our school used to have many after school activities for kids to participate in. Unfortunately, that all changed two years ago when all after school programs were cut because of there was and is no money available to fund them.

My Project

I am requesting high interest TEEN BOOKS for my students to read. Although we have a library in our school most of the books are for younger children and since my students have been in this school for the past 10 years, they have read them already. The books I selected for this classroom project are all from the Teen Bargains section at AKJ Books. The books will help my students engage with big moral issues as well as learning about the Holocaust and ancient Egypt. As you can see from the title of my project, this is my second attempt to receive half-off funding from AKJ. I have also included the additional item from AKJ of a teacher's guide to Farwell to Manzanar, I was able to get used copies of that book for my students but I never had a teacher's guide. Teen Bargain items make up at least 50% of my project's material cost. I have mentioned "TEEN" in the project essay as well as the title of the project. I hope to be considered this time for the half-off funding offer.

With these high interest TEEN BOOKS in our classroom students will enjoy reading, they will become better readers as they enjoy what they read.

Please support this project, having high interest TEEN BOOKS available for my students will lead them to be life-long readers. I work in a high poverty school in a district that has no money for student supplies, the books will enrich the lives of my students Please give to this project. Thank you.
