My Students
At my high school, we are almost the perfect pie chart of diversity: 32% Caucasian, 36% Hispanic, 26% African-American and small percentages of other demographic groups such as Native American or Pacific Islander. We are a big high school (2000+ students) with roughly 63% on free and reduced lunch, and offer a technological route, a creative path or an IB diploma, to name a few ways students can step out into the world. Because I teach across multiple subjects and grades, I have worked with students who need special assistance as well as with those who are driven to achieve at the highest of levels.
For this Donors Choose project, I fully embrace the extreme diversity and unique needs of the teens that are in this two-year class, working in IB Business Management curriculum, and will teach the skills required in both personal and business finance, as well as an in depth look at things such as business plans, the stock market, and tools such as balance sheets or statements of net worth.
These subjects encompass and lead to vital life skills, especially in disenfranchised or marginalized youth struggling with issues of poverty as well as language acquisition.
My Project
There are a host of reasons these many resources have been selected to raise student achievement. First, none are currently available in our media center, and as the only teacher assigned to this class in a county with 80,000+ students, I also see the potential for significant growth and outreach. Students who are not able to buy, and do not have access to texts beyond the adopted textbook are at an extreme disadvantage; this rolling library will allow me to reach the lowest achieving and the most motivated students reach higher levels of success.
In addition to the teen friendly texts to engage and enlighten are pedagogical books for myself, so I can better teach our extremely diverse students how to better communicate with each other--how to "safely debate" financial topics in our class.
Without a doubt, financial literacy skills are crucial to teens that have little to no prior knowledge or experience in matters relating to investing and business matters.
After purchasing games, a rolling cart and online resources myself, I realized the need for things students could borrow from me, use in stations, and compare to other texts was significant. When I attended a seminar this summer given by a professor at a local college who is implementing a semester long stock market project with the students in the class, I had to explain my students have limited to no knowledge of stocks or how they work and trade. By preteaching this topic with these additional resources, this college instructor can come into my class that is much better prepared, and students will feel more confident while competing in a national level stock competition--how exciting is that? Flashcards are another much needed resource--review is crucial before the high stakes exam that spans two days in the spring.
