This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine hearing a child say, "Can I take an apple home? We don't have a lot of food in my house."
My students are growing up in an unsafe, extremely economically disadvantaged neighborhood.
As Kindergartners, this is the foundation of their experience in school. My students are learning to love school through our exciting hands-on, experience-based classroom. Unfortunately, my school is lacking tremendously in resources and funding, and we were provided with hardly any materials.
My students need the proper materials, resources, and furniture to succeed in school!
My Project
In Lesley Koplow's book, "Bears, Bears, Everywhere: Supporting Children's Emotional Health in the Classroom ," she discusses the social and emotional benefits of giving each child a teddy bear to keep in the classroom. One advantage to each child having a bear is that it can serve as a transitional object, or something that can provide comfort and stability when they say goodbye to their caregivers each day. Another benefit to each child having a bear is that it can become a "self object," or a representation of the children themselves. Instead of asking a child, "How are you feeling about...?" We can ask, "How is your bear feeling about...?" Children are much more likely to be forthcoming with answers about the bears than if they were asked the question directly.
Our children enter school so far behind in their social and emotional development.
We hope to have bears, shoe organizers, and curriculum books for the entire kindergarten and first grade, as well as some children from older grades, to help with this very important piece of developing the whole child!
